The figa, a hand gesture or amulet that depicts a closed hand with the thumb between the index and middle fingers, has had many meanings and uses throughout history and across cultures: 

• Evil eye protection: The figa was used as an amulet to protect against the evil eye, or dark and magical forces. The Romans called this belief fascinatio or fascinum. 

• Fertility: The figa was used to promote fertility and invoke goddesses. In Greco-Roman culture, the fig fruit was associated with fertility.
